Turkey is the clear leader!
According to ATOR data, 17.35 million trips were made abroad from Russia in 2024. While Turkey was the most popular destination, a 101% increase in interest in China was striking.
The most preferred destinations and developments in tourism by Russian tourists as of 2024 were summarized by ATOR (Association of Russian Tour Operators). According to the data, a total of 17.35 million trips were made abroad from Russia. This figure indicates a 17.2% increase compared to the previous year.
Turkey continues to remain at the top
Turkey was again the country that Russians traveled the most to in 2024. According to ATOR's estimates, approximately 6.8 million trips were made to Turkey this year. Turkey was followed by China, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Thailand and Abkhazia, respectively. The 101% increase in trips to China was particularly striking.
Two-thirds of Russian trips abroad were organized through tour operators. According to ATOR data, approximately 14.2 million trips were made for touristic purposes in 2024, 9.5 million of which were organized by tour operators. The fastest growing destinations were China, Vietnam and Mauritius.
There was a significant increase in the cost of international travel in 2024. Prices for tours to popular destinations such as Turkey, Egypt and the UAE increased by more than 20%. Despite this, it was observed that the search for higher quality holidays among Russian tourists increased. The demand for luxury and expensive tourism products continued to grow.
ATOR predicts a growth of 5-10% in international tourism for 2025. However, the growth rate is expected to be limited due to the weakening ruble and economic uncertainties. According to experts, the dynamics of the coming year will be determined by the adoption of more conservative strategies by tour operators and the strengthening of early booking systems.
Turkey, Egypt, the UAE, Thailand and China are expected to remain among the most popular destinations in 2025. In addition, it is stated that especially young and low-budget tourists will have difficulties in planning their holidays abroad. Tour operators are planning to develop new tour packages targeting this group.
