Radisson Hotel Group joins Global Sustainable Tourism Council
Radisson Hotel Group, a leading international hotel chain, supports the ever-evolving integrated sustainable tourism practices by joining the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC)
According to a statement from Radisson Hotel Group, Radisson Hotel Group has taken significant steps to take action against climate change in the hospitality sector. One of the most significant steps taken was the establishment of a Net Zero Emissions target by 2050 through the implementation of sustainability, renewable energy, environmentally friendly building design, environmentally friendly transportation and the Fundamental Principles of Sustainable Hotel Management.
The Group’s GSTC membership is one pillar of its strategic focus on developing cross-sector collaboration, establishing transparent and measurable sustainability standards in the hospitality sector and encouraging increased coordination between the private and public sectors.
Like Radisson Hotel Group, GSTC works to be a change agent in the world of sustainable travel and tourism by developing knowledge and understanding of sustainable tourism practices, ensuring that these practices are adopted and demanded.
The Global Sustainable Tourism Council was established in 2007 as a coalition of 32 partners, led by the Rainforest Alliance, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Foundation (UN Foundation) and the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
'We look forward to working with the Council and its stakeholders'
Inge Huijbrechts, Global Senior President, Sustainability, Safety and Corporate Communications, Radisson Hotel Group, whose comments were included in the statement, said:
“As Radisson Hotel Group, we believe that the best way to achieve tangible results and move the industry towards Net Zero Emissions by 2050 is to work together with global stakeholders and industry organizations, such as the Global Sustainable Tourism Council. Sustainability is not about competition, it is about working together, so we can address the global challenges we all face together. We look forward to working with the Global Sustainable Tourism Council and its stakeholders, in line with our stringent criteria, to achieve our Net Zero Emissions goal by 2050 at the latest.”
GSTC CEO Randy Durban said, 'Radisson Hotel Group has taken many important steps towards implementing sustainable practices in its hotels. We are delighted that they are partnering with us to make further progress on the path to sustainability.'
Radisson Hotel Group calls on other hotel chains to achieve Net Zero Emissions
Radisson Hotel Group, which reiterated its commitment to sustainability by signing the Glasgow Declaration during COP27 in Egypt this year, called on other hotel chains to take decisive steps to halve emissions in the next 10 years and reach the Net Zero Emissions target as soon as possible before 2050.
The Group's short-term Science-Based Targets (SBTs) towards its Net Zero Emissions commitment by 2050 have been approved and confirmed. This approval places Radisson Hotel Group among the first companies in the world to set carbon emission reduction targets based on scientific evidence and in line with the COP climate goals.
The Group’s clear targets and plans include reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 46% by 2030 compared to 2019. The Group has also committed to reducing absolute Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions from fuel and energy-related activities and franchise businesses by 28% over the same timeframe. Other targets include ending the use of single-use plastics, continuing to promote best practice through responsible consumption, creating shared value in communities for children and youth at risk, working with key industry stakeholders to create a broader positive impact in the hospitality sector, and creating more opportunities for a more sustainable future. The Group collaborates with global certification bodies such as Green Key, Earth-Check and Green Tourism, which are recognised by GSTC and monitor the sustainability performance of hotels. Earlier this year, at the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) Global Summit, Radisson Hotel Group, together with other top brands, associations and destinations in the industry representing more than 50,000 hotels and more than 70 companies and destinations, introduced the Fundamental Principles of Sustainable Hotel Management, a common and overarching definition of sustainability in hospitality, with the aim of promoting responsible travel and tourism. These principles include 12 actions that are the foundation of sustainable hotel management. They are the Radisson Hotel Group was the pioneer and driving force in creating the Core Principles standard, which includes a coordinated set of minimum indicators that consumers can easily understand.
